Washing My Face with Oil: The Review

Remember how way back when I said I was washing my face with oil? And I told you I would let you know how it was going? Well, I’m still doing it and it is going extremely well. I used to have some seriously oily skin on my face. I mean, SHINY was my forehead’s first name, not middle name. And since I’ve been washing my face with oil? My forehead had to change its name. It is amazing. I also always had redness across my cheeks (and not in a flattering kind of way) and that has gone away, too. My pores are definitely smaller, too.

Also? Blackheads. They are almost non-existent on my nose. Or anywhere else on my face for that matter. And breakouts are almost non-existent, too. It is amazing! Have I mentioned that it’s amazing? Because it is totally amazing. I’ve also totally thrown away all my makeup removers. You know why? Because I don’t need them, that’s why. The oil takes care of it all! Even the waterproof mascara I use. It’s faaahbulousss!

I made a small batch of oil to wash my face with on April 18. It’s now May 26. I still haven’t used up all the oil from my first batch.

Another bonus? My bathroom counter has so much less clutter on it now.

So, I think it’s safe to say that I am a total convert and will continue to make my own blend of oils to use to wash my face. I love it!

If you’re interested in doing it as well, here are some pointers:

  • Don’t surprised if you shell out more than you expect to buy all your initial supplies.
  • Buy cold pressed oils if you can find them. They’re better for your skin.
  • Grape seed oil will last longer if you store it in the fridge.
  • Essential oils are concentrated. A little goes a long way.
  • Keep all your oils in a cool place out of direct sunlight; they’ll last longer.
  • Store your oil mixture in a glass bottle. (My mom says this helps the oil last longer also.) I use a 2 ounce amber glass bottle.
    • They’re fairly inexpensive, too.
  • Make small batches. It will last longer than you expect.

  • I have an oily sugar scrub I got in a trad. I have been a little afraid to use it for the same reasons you were skeptical. I am so going to try it now.

  • Huh. Okay, so do you have a recipe you can send me? I’m thinking I might need to give this a shot with my crazy a$$ skin.

  • Hmmm…I have a plastic bottle with a pump that I use. But as long as it’s small batches, I don’t expect the oil to go bad before I’m done.

I’m using a blend now that’s 50% grapeseed oil, 35% olive oil, 15% castor oil, and then a few drops of tea tree oil. Still loving it. My nose has definitely cleared up. My chin is still a little blackheady with the occasional zit, though. pbbbth. The rest of my complexion is AMAZING.

I haven’t tried this yet, but one of the sites suggested mixing some of your oil blend with sugar to make an exfoliating scrub. I just use my regular apricot scrub once a week – maybe when I run out I’ll try the sugar.

  • Soooo, I might try this too…but, what’s the application like? Do you put it on some cotton or slather all over your face? I’m trying to figure this out logistically.

  • I find that every time I stop using the oil and then start again (which I’ve done a few times in the last year) I get breakouts all over my chin for a couple of weeks while my skin settles back into the oil routine. Which, I guess, is a sign that I shouldn’t stop.

Do you use the oil every day? I keep reading that one should be able to cut back to a few times a week and just use water the other days, but on the days when I go through the motions with hot water and no oil, I still get an oily nose (although less so) later in the day.
