Thinking About Crochet

Yeah, you read that right. I want to learn how to do more than just a stinking chain when it comes to crochet. I am totally in love with amigurumi and granny squares and I want to learn how to make them. Not to mention the fact that my inspiration for getting involved in the fiber arts was my grandmother. And she was a kick-ass crocheter. Her legacy was to crochet every grandchild and great grandchild an afghan. In fact, I got to pick out the colors to mine and I still have it. It is made out of squeaky acrylic, but it was made with love and by incredibly skilled hands. And it’s something I will cherish. And for this reason, there is a soft spot in my heart for crochet.

I am also totally willing to take up anything new to avoid knitting the border on my Jack in the Pulpit 3/4 shawl, because oh. my. god. Do you know how much edging there is on that thing? A WHOLE DAMN LOT. That’s how much. So I’m making myself a deal. First I’m going to knit one repeat of the border and then I’m going to sit down with some instructional videos, yarn and the largest crochet hook I own and see what kind of damage I can do.

There are so many crochet projects I want to do and I suck at it. I can’t figure out how to manage the yarn with my left hand. It’s like my knitterly ways won’t let me…

  • Yeah, I’m the same as stick when it comes to crochet. I have a hard time keeping tension in my left hand. Good luck on your crochet adventure. My grand mother also crocheted all her grand kids an afgahn and several dolls, animals and booties!! Love her crochet house shoes. ;-) Still have a pair I wear all the time.

  • Crochet it part of the circle of life. I knew how to crochet long before i knew how to knit. Been doing it since I was 15 (ZOMG – 35 years – hold me). I don’t talk about it much but it does come in handy every now and then.

Embrace the crochet, but work on the edging a little bit. Come one! We wanna see that darn thing finished!
