The Backwards

Usually when you get married, it goes something like this:
Boy and girl meet. Girl and boy fall in love. Boy asks girl to marry him and gives her a diamond ring. Girl plans wedding and drives boy crazy. Boy and girl get married, go on honeymoon and live “happily ever after.”

Unless you are us. If you are us, it will go more like this:
Boy and girl meet. At a karoake bar where neither of us karaoke. Girl avoids boy because her friend has a crush on him even though she thinks he’s HOT. They end up dating anyway. Boy asks girl to marry him. Girl says no the first time. Boy asks girl to marry him again. She agrees, but only if they don’t say they’re engaged. Boy agrees. Boy and girl get married in a very small courthouse ceremony. Then they get wedding bands. Then, a year and a half later, he gets her an engagement ring.

Engagement Ring

I hate diamonds, but I really like gems. So finding what I wanted was hard. I didn’t have anything specific in mind, but I knew I would know it when I saw it. And yes I did. It’s a blue topaz with chocolate diamonds (I like them because they’re not white and they’re accents, not the centerpiece) and I love love love it. I love it almost as much as I love the man who gave it to me.

When a man asks you to spend the rest of your life with him, you don’t have to make up your mind right then. Maybe you know, maybe you don’t. Maybe he’s bold and surprised you, or you have already decided, or maybe he’s shy and so are you, or maybe a million other things.

But eventually you make up your mind, and you know what to do, and maybe you have conditions that keep your world from getting out of your control.

And you said yes. And if B is anything like I imagine him, he’ll remember the moment forever.

And your ring will be there when you look down at your hands. And it will remind you of that moment and of your life together and everything that those things mean to you.

It doesn’t matter a whit that your ring found you belatedly. It still represents everything that it would have had you put it on that day. Cherish it – I know you will. Your ring will remind you of what it means at the most appropriate times and when you least expect it. Really.

There is nothing that I wear that is as important to me as my ring. To keep from distracting from its importance to me it is the only jewelry I ever wear.

Bask in the life your ring represents. No matter its brilliance, it cannot compare with the luster of love. No matter its value, it is never so precious as your bond.

  • I love your ring, Grace!!! Seriously! I am coveting your ring!
