Technical Question

I have a question for all you code geniuses out there. Well, it’s kind of long winded because that’s how I roll. Anhyway, here’s the deal. I’ve installed the Comment Timeout plugin. It definitely keeps the spam bots from hitting holder posts, but it also has removed all comments from older posts.

Is there something I need to add to the comments.php file to show the comments that were posted but still shows that the comments are closed? Or is there a plugin that I need to add to do that? Or am I asking for the impossible? Because right now, I feel like I’m asking for the impossible.

I know this is not a life or death situation, but it is something that has been driving me nuts for way too long. I haven’t figured out to make the comments do what I want, but I did manage to break them once. I fixed them, but I took that as a sign that I need to stop messing with something I don’t fully understand (yet) and ask a professional.

So, can anyone help me? Anyone? Bueller?

  • I can ask my dad. He’s my techno-guru-make blog go guy. I’ll email him tomorrow. :-)

  • Uhhhhhhhh………….I think you should knit then purl. Does that help?

Do you have akismet plugin installed and activated for spam too? I haven’t been spammed once since i had my blog, but that could also be because I have my privacy settings to: I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors.
I don’t know how to fix the code, but maybe adjusting the privacy settings and activating akismet will help prevent the spamming all together?

  • Code makes me want to stab my eyeballs.

But! The name of the farm where I got the awesome shetland fleece last year is Rare Find Farm and they had processed roving too, in case you don’t want to process it yourself. Awesome fleeces, great prices. I’m jealous. If I’d known it was this weekend, I’d have made plans to go! I thought it was next weekend.

  • Maybe I should call them and have you pick up a fleece for me… would you be willing?

  • Hi, I’m Bubblesknits’ Dad. From what she told me and what I’ve read on the plugin it’s looking to me like the threshold is set too low.

In other words, say you have a post with 10 comments. The post is from last February. You install this plugin and set it to block any further comments from 5 on out. The post with 10 comments loses it’s comments.

Maybe try setting the threshold to a higher limit would help prevent older posts with more comments from being lost.

  • Um, yeah, I don’t even HAVE comments on my blog (‘cuz I don’t like to talk to no damn people!) so you’re already more nerdy than I am!!!
