More Knitting, But with Dogs

Last weekend I spent the majority of it on the porch with the dogs while I finished up knitting and seaming a baby sweater.

HOARDER

My Little Hoarder

They had a blast watching the Squirrels! and just being dogs in general. Can you tell Cody used to be a stray? He has a tendency to hoard and steal treats.

Seaming

Seaming Trellis

I enjoyed being out on the deck, listening to my audiobook, knittingseaming and capturing the moments. Also, two tv trays and a large blocking board can make for an excellent workspace outdoors. I can’t tell you just how much I love my deck.

Perfect Afternoon

The dogs love it, too.

Not too long after that, I went to Chicago for work and also a baby shower. For which I made this swaddling blanket and Trellis.

The presents were a huge hit.

Then on the way home from Chicago, I ended up sitting across the aisle from another Raveler whom I may have stalked from time to time, Elliebelly!

All in all, it was a good, albeit tiring week. I’m glad to be back at home; I feel mostly caught up on sleep and I’m really glad to be with my family.

Gauge Is Evil

I’m knitting a surprise baby present for someone I know who doesn’t know I’m knitting this. Hence, the surprise part. Anyway, when it comes to garments, I love baby sized things because they knit up so fast and it’s a whole garment! So I thought I would knit Trellis again. It’s a highly engaging knit and I love the way it looks when it’s done. Also, it’s super duper über fast. And I’ve knit it before so I’m clearly an expert AND a professional when it comes to this sweater.

Trellis

See? l am so totally a professional. And an expert.

The last time I knit this sweater up, I did it in a cotton blend because that baby lives in the south. This time, the baby will live in northern climes which are much more suited to an actual wool sweater. So I got some Mission Falls 1824 Wool (100% Superwash Merino) which is also an aran weight yarn and what the pattern calls for. It also calls for US size 7 needles or whatever you need to get gauge. Gauge, schmage. I know what I’m doing! I used size 7 needles last time and the sweater came out perfectly! Nevermind that I used a completely different yarn.

I AM A PROFESSIONAL.  I know what I’m doing.

Or, if you live in the South, HOLD MY BEER AND WATCH THIS.

Mission Falls Yarn

See this yarn? It is professional yarn. OK, it’s an aran weight yarn. Which is what the pattern calls for. Well, it actually calls for Rowan All Seasons Cotton yarn. According to Ravelry, Rowan All Seasons Cotton is an aran weight yarn.  The pattern also calls for US size 7 needles. Which I used. And over the course of the last 5 days, 6 including today, I ended up with an almost completed back:

6 Month Size Trellis Back

Trellis Back, supposedly Size 6 Months...

I’m knitting the 6 months size sweater. I, of course, did not bother with a gauge swatch because gauge swatches lie. And they take up precious knitting time. Unless you just jump right into knitting the garment. So let’s call this a gauge swatch. One that…well…does not compute. It looks a little big for a 6 months size sweater, doesn’t it? I thought so. I was about 9 rows from the neck shaping, but the back was looking a wee big large for a 6 month old. So I stopped and took a quick measurement.

Fail

FAIL

Hmmm… according to the pattern your gauge should be 21 sts/28 rows = 4 inches in pattern. What I’m getting is more like 16 sts/26 rows = 4 inches in pattern. Whoops. Looks like my gauge is a little off. Or I’m knitting a baby garment for a 6 month old baby giant. You decide. Um, on second thought. Don’t. So I’m doing the smart thing. Finally. I’ve ripped back and started over on US size 5 needles and still knitting the 6 month old size sweater. According to my fuzzy math logic, this will totally work.

Right?

Disgustingly Cute

The other day when I was being all vague and whatnot? That was because I was knitting Trellis for my friend Kate’s soon to be born baby girl. And let me just say this. I love baby sweaters so much, even the seaming is not a chore.

I didn’t block it though because, well, I decided not to. All right fine. I got a little lazy. And also wanted to dye roving. Which I totally did AND finished dyeing it and everything before 11:00 pm. I rock.

ANYWAY. Baby knits. This is going to be about baby knits and how much I love them. I really really REALLY loved knitting this little sweater up. If you you are one of those people who hasn’t knit a sweater because it involves SO MUCH YARN (And also, who has that kind of attention span?), then baby sweaters are perfect for you.

Trellis
cute even when it’s not blocked

I also got all fancy with the editing of this photo. Finally. We won’t discuss how long it took me to accept that photoshopping a digital photo is not heinous and evil and inherently WRONG because I couldn’t get the color to represent properly because I lack seriously good lighting, mkay? (Run on sentence much?)

I accidentally made a design modification when I knit this sweater. Notice how my large cables are not so distinctly cable-y? Just more suggestive of a cable type thing? I’m pretty sure it’s because I sorta read the pattern a tad bit backwards when it came to the cables. I’m not sure than you can technically call it dyslexic, but it’s definitely left-handian (That is TOO a word. SHUT UP). Good thing I like it. And that Kate can’t read a knitting pattern. To me, it makes the sweater seem more girly. And this is a really good thing since Kate is having a girl. But the things that makes it the most girly is the buttons.

Trellistotally lickable buttons

I love them. And so did Kate. She loved the sweater and everything. It also helps that when this baby girl is around the 6 months of age mark, it will be sweater wearing weather time. Tres magnifique, no? And it might just be the one thing this little girl will wear before she turns 2 that is NOT pink.

And the other good thing? I get to take cross out yet another knit on my Mission Possible 2008 List.

You Probably Didn't Want to Know That

I thought I would post less often and then that way I would have more to say. What if I have found is that when I post less often, I find myself thinking that I should suddenly have something important and meaningful to blog about. Something that will change your life and probably make you cry.

And then I think, “What the fuck? This is a self-indulgent, nonsensical, sometimes knitting related blog. YOU ARE NOT OPRAH.” Which then leads to, “Damn, I hate Dr. Phil. He is such a moron. HOW did he get his own TV show? Who did HE sleep with? Oprah?”

It pretty much goes to hell in a ha’nd basket after that.

So here’s what’s been going on with me when I am not obsessing about my hatred of Dr. Phil:

I have given my anal-retentive need to finish a project before I start a new one the boot. I have started TWO different projects in the last THREE days. I know, right? CALL THE PRESS! I’m sure there are some of you that are like, “Big whoop. I’ve started 13 projects in one day. TOP THAT!” I could, but I won’t. I don’t like to be a show off.

[Sister? SHUT UP.]

Also, I just realized that it kinda maybe screws me hardcore in the Mission Possible attempt. This wild abandon of starting projects all willy nilly and stuff. Because tonight? I might just start on another project. It could happen. Well, maybe not. A scarf and a baby sweater are totally doable along with my attempt to rid myself of some seriously languishing UFOs, right? Yes? I am only marginally delusional? Don’t answer that.

No! Wait! I am a little absent minded sometimes. The baby sweater? It is Trellis. WHICH IS ON MY LIST. So I’m actually doing just fine. So nevermind about the screwing myself. Also? I love it. I’m knitting it with Debbie Bliss Rialto in Moss which is 100% superwash merino. This yarn is so soft. And it’s sproingy to the Nth degree. I love this yarn so much, I would totally go parking with it and we would make out and I would maybe even let it get to second base. It is that good.

Also, I understand now why people like to knit baby things. You can knit an entire sweater in like 3 days. Ok, so maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration for me (if you can knit that fast, don’t tell me so we can stay friends, ok?). But seriously, you can have a garment all knit up and good to go in no time flat. I’m also thinking that this little sweater is going to get so much more mileage than that stupid squeaky blanket.

Oh, and on a COMPLETELY unrelated note? Last night while I was knitting Trellis, I was watching Ghost Rider in HD. When B and I went to go see it in the theatres, we had a good laugh about Nick Cage’s cock sucking abs during his bath towel scene. So, watching Ghost Rider at home meant I got to see Nick Cage’s cock sucking abs in HD and it was, um, probably only funny to me.

Have I mentioned how much I hate Dr. Phil?
