Dear Internets,

I have a confession to make. It pains me to think this, much less say it out loud, but it’s got to be said.

I think everyone is colorblind except me.

I don’t know how this happened. Maybe everyone but me got a mislabeled box of crayons and don’t know their colors? I’m trying to come to grips with the fact that no one seems to know navy blue when they see it.

However, now that we have identified the problem, hopefully we can find a way to remedy the situation. How did this all come about? Well, it started with some yarn and a pair of socks. The yarn in question is Regia 4 fädig in the lovely colorway named 5391. According to Yarndex: Nation Schwarz-gelb (Black, Gold) However, the manufacturer is also clearly mistaken.

Welt Fantastic Socks

Clearly this is a DARK NAVY BLUE and yellow yarn. Not yellow and grey yarn. CLEARLY. I just don’t understand why no one can see this except me. I’m not sure how we can remedy this situation, but I think it will probably start with the relabeling of crayons.

So,  you see, dear internets, I have a big job ahead of me of re-educating almost everyone I know on what is navy blue and what is grey. I hope you aren’t colorblind, too.

Love,
Miss Pants

Just One More Repeat

Basketweave Socks

It’s one of those love hate relationships. I love the way Noro knits up, but I hate all the snarls and breaks and knots in the yarn. And the basket weave pattern is just enough to keep me interested. In fact, I daresay it is just a tad bit addictive. I keep telling myself I’ll put these socks down and do something else, like laundry, after just one more repeat. And somehow, there is always just one more repeat. I have a feeling that I will end up knitting these socks until I run out of yarn.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got one more repeat to knit.

BAD Boy Ankle Socks

2009_11190006

Pattern: Mine. I prefer a magic cast on and short row heel for toe up socks. The ribbing for the cuff is k4, p2, k2, p2, and I did a knitted bind off, which is my new favorite.

Yarn: Knit Witch Celestial BFL Superwash; Colorway: Pisces (She doesn’t have any listed on her site, but if you ask nice, she might do a custom job.)

Needles: Addi Turbo Lace Circulars, US2/3.0mm. I think they’re 40″ circulars.

Commentary: I knit these both at the same time toe up using magic loop. This is my most favorite way of knitting socks because two at a time totally obliterates any chance of developing Second Sock Syndrome. Plus, when you’re done? You have a pair of socks. Not one sock. Two. Two socks. It rocks. The yarn is fantastic. I think I like knitting with BFL better than with Merino. It was a little bit splitty, but not bad. The softness of this yarn and the way it knits up makes me very happy.

As soon as I finished them tonight, BAD Boy wore them right off the needles. The highest compliment he will pay to anything he likes is, “They’re SO SOFT!” Which these socks got so I’m going to go out on a limb here and say he likes them. I may have had to promise to wash them tonight so they would be clean for him to wear tomorrow to school. He just could not wait to wear them again.

I would also like to point out that those are my sock blockers that I got at Stitches South and this is the first time I’ve completed a pair of socks since I got them. They’re the small sock blockers. However, BAD Boy’s socks? BIGGER THAN THE SOCK BLOCKERS. ::sob:: This means his feet are roughly the same size as mine or possibly probably even larger. Did I mention that he’s only NINE?! Granted, I did make the socks a little big so he could wear them at least through this winter. But still! NINE.

*sigh*

Though, I suppose if we were to look on the bright side, I will probably inherit a pair of socks from BAD Boy by about next winter.

Perfect Fit

DSCF6678

It’s amazing how uncooperative my model can be at 12:32 in the morning. Still, despite his unwillingness to wake up, he did manage to express gratitude (as is fitting) and wore the socks for most of the night.

Specks: Toe up vanilla socks
Yarn: Knit Witch Celestial Sock Yarn
Needles: US 2.5
This yarn is a total dream to knit and makes THE SQUISHIEST socks evar. It gets an enthusiastic two toes up.

Vanilla and Not

For the first time ever, B has agreed to socks that are not grey or black and since I’m knitting these 2 sock on magic loop, there is less likelihood of him losing a sock like last time. So, yay for not black socks!

DSCF6523

These are my carry with my everywhere project and I work on them at home, on my lunch break and pretty much anywhere I can get a few minutes to knit. This is Knit Witch sock yarn in Pisces that is a total handgasm to knit with and NOT splitty at all. And the socks are downright squishy. I heart this yarn.

Every time I make B try them on to check my progress and make sure they fit (so far so good) and ask him how they feel he always says the same two things:

“It feels like I’m not even wearing socks.”

and

“They’re kind of loose at the top. Can you fix that?”

The second two sentences makes me completely crazy because no matter how many times I explain to him that the stitches at the top are LIVE and are going to stretch out more than the ones that are not live until the socks are done, he still asks me every time. I think he likes to watch me twitch when he asks.

Good thing I don’t let him try them on very often.

Denial is a Wonderful Thing

These socks are a tad too short and a tad too tight for me, and yet I continue to knit them. Because, you know, maybe when they’re done they’ll grow a little and fit perfectly.

I can’t decide if I need to rip them back and restart or just find someone to pawn them off on. I’ll probably rip them back to the toe and redo them. I’m just not ready for that kind of defeat. Yet. *sigh*

Allow Me to Proposition You

Ok, remember how I said I wrote my own sock pattern? Well, I?ve got 4 variations on the lace pattern that I?d like to test out, but don?t want to be consumed with knitting socks when I have Christmas knitting to do, so this is where I ask you for help.

I need 4 ? 5 people who would be willing to knit the sock in its various forms. I can?t offer you money or fortune or fame. However, I can offer you this:

Willing test knitters will receive the following from me:
One original sock pattern with all variations

What I ask of you in return:
FEEDBACK

Something you should know about the pattern:
It is toe up on magic loop. If you?ve never done toe up on magic loop, don?t be scared! I?ve written out everything in excruciating detail because this was my first pair of toe up socks.

So, any takers? If so, leave me a comment. This will be first come first serve.

ETA: I’ve got all the test knitters I need. Thanks!

Honeycomb Ladder

I decided that the very first time I would try toe up socks, I would also write my own sock pattern. I’ve let this sock sit in my knitting back for far too long, but I think that I am ready to add a ribbed cuff and bind off to start its mate.

And can I just say? I think this is the best heel I have ever knit.

In which I continue to talk about a sock I still refuse to show you

I finally sat down with the sock pattern and we had a long talk about my expectations in this relationship. What I wanted to get out of it. What it wanted from the relationship. I won?t lie. It got ugly for a little while and there was some screaming and shouting. Maybe even some crying and a little dash of pleading. There was one point when I was sure we just weren?t going to make it and we?d have to go our separate ways. But in end, it all worked out.

We finally came to an agreement (i.e. I finally got my way) and the sock pattern did what I wanted. We?re getting along much better now and we?re expecting a sock any day now. Maybe even twins! Keep your fingers crossed that it?s smooth sailing from here on out.

And now I ask you guys a question. For those of you who love the toe-up method, what is your favorite heel method? And why?
