You Learn Something New Every Day

Yesterday, I transported two of the most adorable Rottweiler puppies to the Atlanta airport so they could get on a plane to go meet their new daddies in Guatemala. And because school is out, I ended up with two helpers who were less thrilled about the getting up at 6 am part of driving to Atlanta, but excited about the prospect of visiting the Georgia Aquarium. It was an incredibly educational trip. Here are some of the things we learned yesterday.

  1. The cargo drop off areas for airlines other than FedEx, UPS or Delta are really hard to find at the Atlanta airport.
  2. Puppies and dead people can potentially be on the same plane. A dude in a hearse dropped off a casket while we were there.
  3. Shipping puppies is fairly common. Another lady was there with a dachshund puppy to be shipped.
  4. Not everyone can tell time and do math. When we got there at 1pm to drop the puppies off, the dude behind the counter told me we would have to wait an hour because we couldn’t drop them off more than 4 hrs before the flight. The flight was scheduled to leave at 4:36pm.
  5. If you are shipping two puppies in one crate, they have to be from the same litter. I don’t know why, but apparently it’s a big deal. Actual conversation I had yesterday:
Him: Are these puppies from the same litter?Me: I don’t know. Does it matter?

Him: Yes. If they’re not from the same litter then they can’t travel in the crate together.

Me: Then they’re from the same litter.

  6. A pile of sleeping otters is one of the cutest things on the planet. Pile of Otters
  7. Alligators do not care if you watch them get it on. This is also very embarrassing for 12 year olds. They may something like, “We can go now.” when they see nature acting, well, naturally.Albino Alligator Lovin'
  8. There is a dolphin show now at the Georgia Aquarium that is…well… The dolphins are amazing. The rest of the show? Yeah, not so much. It was pretty awful. The opposite of fabulous. Times infinity. The dolphins, though, were SPECTACULAR.
  9. Here are the rest of the photos I shot at the Aquarium yesterday. http://www.flickr.com/photos/graceshadix/sets/72157629976879796
  10. I am very tired today.

What’s up with you guys?

Playing at the Botanical Gardens

The other day, Melissa came over and we went to play with our cameras at the Botanical Gardens. I don’t know why it never occurs to me to visit the Gardens when it’s in the spring… oh, wait. I know why. I’m usually sneezing my head off outdoors and avoid flowering places. Maybe this year that won’t be an issue. (I’ve got a great allergy doctor who has helped me tremendously. Better living through science, bitches!)

The fun thing about going out to take photos with a friend is the creativity flying around and seeing someone else look at something from an angle you normally wouldn’t think of taking a photo or seeing something. I got down and dirty (literally) taking some of these pictures and I think if I hadn’t made that sacrifice (I don’t know if I’ll be able to get the sap out of those pants), I wouldn’t have gotten the great shots I did. Next time I will rethink my wardrobe before going somewhere I plan on laying in the (wet) dirt and grass to get the shot I’m after.

The other thing that is good for creativity is that when you go to a Garden in the middle of winter (no matter how warm it is), there aren’t a bunch of pretty flowers to take pictures of so you have to find other interesting things to capture.

And you can find color, just in less expected places.

Melissa and I decided that we would go back to Botanical Gardens in the spring/summer to see how much we’ve improved and to take some photos of actual flowers.

I’m currently reading The Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby and it’s a treasure trove of information, but there is still so much more for me to learn. I can’t wait for my photography class in February! In the meantime, I need to find some other places to go take photos. Suggestions, anyone?

Girls' Trip!

A couple of weeks ago I went on my annual trek to the mountains of Asheville, NC for SAFF and stayed in a rustic cottage of mostly awesomeness with my girls Evil Science Chick, Evil Julie and Nytefalle.

We learned that if a bear shits in the woods, it definitely stinks. (A bear may or may not have shit outside our cabin. Or possibly the drunk boys 2 cottages down. OR there may have been an issue with a septic tank. We went with bear.) We pretty much blamed that bear for anything remotely stinky. Strangely enough, I think that bear may have followed me home.

Then Jared took in my order. I’ll be getting a beautiful DK weight yarn out of the mix. I can’t wait to see what they do with it all!

I blew my Vegas wad on a loom! [Sidenote: I won a grand in Vegas on the penny slots and my first thought was "OH MY GOD, I WON!!!" and my second thought was, "SAFF MONEY!!!!!"] I got a Kromski Harp 24″ Rigid Heddle Loom. As you can see here, I set it up as soon as I got home and started warping almost immediately. I think this is an excellent starter loom. You have the loom on one side, flip it over and the warp is on the other. Which is what you’re looking at. (The pegs are removable. Also very awesome.) I will be going through my used stash to find the rest of my sock yarn remnants to play with this baby on my first run. I imagine it will become a scarf that only a first-time weaver can love. But I can definitely see how easy it will be to use up a lot of yarn quickly. Maybe even some of my handspun. Also? It has the option of adding a second heddle, which means I can get fancy with the designs. Lots of options.

This was my 6th year of attending SAFF. I can honestly say that it never gets old. Asheville in October is absolutely gorgeous.

Oreo Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies

Lazy Baker's Oreo "Stuffed" Chocolate Chip Cookies

After seeing two of my friends make Oreo stuffed chocolate chip cookies, I had to give it a go. And since I was craving something chocolatey today, it was kind of like destiny, really.

I always use the chocolate chip recipe on the back of the back of Toll House Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips with 2 small modifications. I use dark brown sugar instead of light brown and I don’t always use vanilla. Honestly? I can never really tell the difference when I use vanilla so it’s no big whoop to me. And using dark brown sugar makes the cookies turn out a more caramel color, which I find aesthetically pleasing. Tonight was a real treat because I got to bake cookies with someone who had never made them from scratch. She did an awesome job.

Oreo Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies

That's Bob in the back, watching over the cookies.

I love baking cookies. It’s a fun, kind of messy science project. You mix a whole bunch of precisely measured ingredients together. And when you do it right, the final result is super tasty. What’s not to love about that?

Anyway, if you look at some of the recipes online, the Oreos are completely engulfed top and bottom with chocolate chip cookie dough. And as much as I love sweets, that is a little too decadent even for me. So instead of doing that, we placed the Oreos on the cookie sheet and put a nice big dollop of chocolate chip cookie dough on top of them. The cookies went into the oven at 350 for about 15 – 16 minutes.

OK, So Not Exactly Stuffed

OK, so not exactly stuffed.

As they were cooking, the chocolate chip cookie dough slowly covered over the Oreo. The end result is an absolutely delicious and decadent super cookie.

FOODGASM!

COOKIEGASM!

We made almost 3 dozen cookies. As I type this, there are closer to 2 dozen cookies left. You can’t eat just one.

Random Tuesday

A lot and not a lot has been going on lately so I really was at a loss and then it hit me. Ramble! Random! And maybe a list or two. And pictures. Lots of random pictures.

1. Our deck. It’s bigger than your deck. You can just eyeball it and tell. There is no need to get out a measuring tape. Seriously. And it’s awesome.

Deck

Fancy Furniture

Next up will be furniture for the deck, but finding something we both like AND can afford…well, it’ll be awhile before the two match up, I think. Turns out we have expensive taste in furniture. Maybe we should petition IKEA to make outdoor furniture.

Big Deck

It Goes on for Days!

I can’t wait to get a table and chairs out here. Al fresco dining! And I’m thinking about getting something along the line of these for the dogs as well so they’ll have their own place outside. Because that big dog bed that’s out there? They won’t share it. Well, they’ll share it… Just not at the same time. Especially if a treat is involved. And probably one of the cat condos will go outside too. Once we put a latch on the door to keep the animals from getting out on their own, the cats will be allowed on the deck again. They love sunning out there. The dogs are easy to bribe with treats and petting and they stay nearby.

2. I saw these in the yard the other day and they made me smile. And think of the Smurf cartoons of my youth. And then I wondered if maybe tiny smurfy gnomes might live in my yard.

1313584331008

And then I thought about Neil Patrick Harris and how awesome he is. And then I thought he probably doesn’t sleep anymore what with the babies and all. And that all that lack of sleep is seriously compromising his judgment and that’s how he ended up doing that Smurfs movie. Because I think if he’d had enough sleep, he’d realize that making that movie was NOT a good idea. And no, I’m not going to watch it. I’ve already passed judgement. Did NO ONE learn from the Garfield movie fiasco? Honestly…

3. This past weekend was girls’ weekend, aka DOCTOR WHO CAME BACK ON!!! And Regan and Melissa came over and we had a really awesome time drinking daiquiris and eating expensive pizza and sugar coma inducing cupcakes. There was also a lot of scrabble playing. Just, on our phones instead of on a board. And the only picture I took all weekend was this one. And yet, it kind of sums up the whole weekend perfectly.

Awesome Weekend Is Awesome

Friday night Evil Science Chick came over and we commenced our girl’s weekend. It involved a lot of knitting.

Catching ESC up on Doctor Who. She hadn’t seen Season 5 yet. Really, I was providing a public service. Sort of. Just… go with it. It was IMPORTANT.

LOTS of snuggling with doggehs.

Doggeh Snuggling

Surrounded!

Normally, that’s me. It was really nice to get a break. That break, however, didn’t last all that long. The dogs just figured they would get twice the pets. Pretty sure they were right.

Getting pampered.

Mani/Pedis

Spa Pedicure

The place where I go for mani/pedis has a special right now where if you get a signature spa pedicure (or whatever they call it), it comes with a 15 minute back massage. Also known as THE GREATEST PEDICURE IN ALL THE LAND.

Checking out all manner of metal animals while doing a little shopping.

Rabbits, Chickens and Pigs with Wings!

Rabbits, Chickens and Pigs with Wings!

I kind of want to get a bunch of the little metal chickens and put them all over the backyard. Free range metal chickens! I’m pretty sure they’re easier to take care of than real chickens. The only downside is that metal eggs are generally inedible.

Armadillo

Metal Armadillos - Still Not Cute

Metal armadillos…I’m not sure who thought this would be a good idea. The one that’s laying on its side looks more armadillo-like to me. If they were all on their sides or on their backs it would be more believable. But still not cute.

Pink Flamingo

Flamingo

I was so sure B would want a couple of these flamingos. But he wasn’t impressed with them.

Giant Metal Chicken

Obligatory Giant Metal Chicken

He wanted one of these. I wonder if it’s because a giant metal rooster is more manly than a flamingo? I have no idea. But we do know they are all the rage. I’m sure this post by The Bloggess has nothing to do with it.

I’m sure not everyone wants a giant metal cock in their yard. So for the more refined metal animal lover, there is this fella.

Giant Metal Giraffe

And The Always Classy Giant Metal Giraffe

Because everyone knows that giraffes are classy.

So in a nutshell, it was a weekend full of awesome.

Girls Weekend

Sometimes what a girl really needs is girls weekend. And that’s exactly what I got this weekend. I drove through a thunderstorm just for girls weekend. That’s how important it was to have it. At least, it was for me.

My weekend was spent primarily with Evil Science Chick but I also spent some quality time with Hockey Mom and Olivia Knits.

There was lots of pool time, knitting and spinning.

In other words, the perfect summer girls weekend.

Field Trip!

This past weekend I went to go hang out with Evil Science Chick. We spent Saturday knitting, drinking wine, eating cupcakes, knitting, snacking on cheese and crackers, knitting…you get the idea.  Also, there may have been a pitcher of margaritas in there somewhere… but I digress.

Sunday we went out for Dim Sum for lunch with these hoars.

And then we all went on a field trip to visit Fleury Sheep and Wool.

And met up with a few more friends.

We got a tour of the mill which was really cool. I’m always so impressed by Jen’s fund of knowledge. And Jared kicks ass, too.

We saw the cutest yarn dog evar, Wyatt.

And then we picked up our award-winning fleece turned yarn.

I declare the weekend a HUGE SUCCESS.
