Girls' Trip!

A couple of weeks ago I went on my annual trek to the mountains of Asheville, NC for SAFF and stayed in a rustic cottage of mostly awesomeness with my girls Evil Science Chick, Evil Julie and Nytefalle.

We learned that if a bear shits in the woods, it definitely stinks. (A bear may or may not have shit outside our cabin. Or possibly the drunk boys 2 cottages down. OR there may have been an issue with a septic tank. We went with bear.) We pretty much blamed that bear for anything remotely stinky. Strangely enough, I think that bear may have followed me home.

Moving along!

We ate lots of tasty, tasty food.

It is both awesome and dangerous to be friends with folks who on a fiber mill. I had 2 alpaca fleeces and also wool from Sugar Ray (I hope he’s getting plenty of tail in bunny heaven) that I wanted to blend and Jen picked out this gorgeous Corriedale for me. Then Jared took in my order. I’ll be getting a beautiful DK weight yarn out of the mix. I can’t wait to see what they do with it all!

And the coup d’état :

Loom!

Loom!

I blew my Vegas wad on a loom! [Sidenote: I won a grand in Vegas on the penny slots and my first thought was "OH MY GOD, I WON!!!" and my second thought was, "SAFF MONEY!!!!!"] I got a Kromski Harp 24″ Rigid Heddle Loom. As you can see here, I set it up as soon as I got home and started warping almost immediately. I think this is an excellent starter loom. You have the loom on one side, flip it over and the warp is on the other. Which is what you’re looking at. (The pegs are removable. Also very awesome.) I will be going through my used stash to find the rest of my sock yarn remnants to play with this baby on my first run. I imagine it will become a scarf that only a first-time weaver can love. But I can definitely see how easy it will be to use up a lot of yarn quickly. Maybe even some of my handspun. Also? It has the option of adding a second heddle, which means I can get fancy with the designs. Lots of options.

This was my 6th year of attending SAFF. I can honestly say that it never gets old. Asheville in October is absolutely gorgeous.

ESC Modeling Her Knits

Awesome Weekend Is Awesome

Friday night Evil Science Chick came over and we commenced our girl’s weekend. It involved a lot of knitting.

Catching ESC up on Doctor Who. She hadn’t seen Season 5 yet. Really, I was providing a public service. Sort of. Just… go with it. It was IMPORTANT.

LOTS of snuggling with doggehs.

Doggeh Snuggling

Surrounded!

Normally, that’s me. It was really nice to get a break. That break, however, didn’t last all that long. The dogs just figured they would get twice the pets. Pretty sure they were right.

Getting pampered.

Mani/Pedis

Spa Pedicure

The place where I go for mani/pedis has a special right now where if you get a signature spa pedicure (or whatever they call it), it comes with a 15 minute back massage. Also known as THE GREATEST PEDICURE IN ALL THE LAND.

Checking out all manner of metal animals while doing a little shopping.

Rabbits, Chickens and Pigs with Wings!

Rabbits, Chickens and Pigs with Wings!

I kind of want to get a bunch of the little metal chickens and put them all over the backyard. Free range metal chickens! I’m pretty sure they’re easier to take care of than real chickens. The only downside is that metal eggs are generally inedible.

Armadillo

Metal Armadillos - Still Not Cute

Metal armadillos…I’m not sure who thought this would be a good idea. The one that’s laying on its side looks more armadillo-like to me. If they were all on their sides or on their backs it would be more believable. But still not cute.

Pink Flamingo

Flamingo

I was so sure B would want a couple of these flamingos. But he wasn’t impressed with them.

Giant Metal Chicken

Obligatory Giant Metal Chicken

He wanted one of these. I wonder if it’s because a giant metal rooster is more manly than a flamingo? I have no idea. But we do know they are all the rage. I’m sure this post by The Bloggess has nothing to do with it.

I’m sure not everyone wants a giant metal cock in their yard. So for the more refined metal animal lover, there is this fella.

Giant Metal Giraffe

And The Always Classy Giant Metal Giraffe

Because everyone knows that giraffes are classy.

So in a nutshell, it was a weekend full of awesome.

Field Trip!

This past weekend I went to go hang out with Evil Science Chick. We spent Saturday knitting, drinking wine, eating cupcakes, knitting, snacking on cheese and crackers, knitting…you get the idea.  Also, there may have been a pitcher of margaritas in there somewhere… but I digress.

Sunday we went out for Dim Sum for lunch with these hoars.

And then we all went on a field trip to visit Fleury Sheep and Wool.

And met up with a few more friends.

We got a tour of the mill which was really cool. I’m always so impressed by Jen’s fund of knowledge. And Jared kicks ass, too.

We saw the cutest yarn dog evar, Wyatt.

And then we picked up our award-winning fleece turned yarn.

Yarnz!

I declare the weekend a HUGE SUCCESS.

Sometimes Being Responsible Blows

We’re trying to be better managers of our money. We want to be debt free. And then we want to be able to save to do fun stuff like travel abroad or take extravagant holidays and own a front loading washer and dryer. So we’re working on being smarter spenders and more frugal. We’re diligently cutting out coupons and using them strategically to save as much money as possible grocery shopping. (If you live in the South/South East, this is a fantastic website that does most of the work for you.) Actually, we’re trying to be smarter spenders, period. This means shopping sales for pretty much anything we need to buy as much as we can. For the most part, we’re doing all right. Especially when it comes to coupon usage. Now, we’re not at the “I bought 400 groceries and made money instead of spending money” end of coupon usage, but we’re making smarter purchases and taking the time to use coupons and on the whole we are saving somewhere between 35 – 50% on what we buy. Considering that we’ve only been doing this for a couple of week, I’d call it a pretty decent start. And, for the record, we’re sticking to the healthier things and we’re not buying stuff just because it’s on sale. We’re working towards only buying what we need and/or use.

Honestly? Saving money is kind of addictive. It becomes a game of “how much can we get off this?” And wow, that sounds…inappropriate. We are totally not into sex games at our local grocery store. Just saving money.

Moving on.

I think the hardest thing for us is cutting back on eating out. Because, well, we LIKE eating out. And. I don’t cook. I refused to learn how when I was a kid and the few times I have learned how to cook something, well, it’s not cooking. I prefer to bake. I love baking. Mostly sweets, but I also like baking casseroles. And, wouldn’t you know, I married someone who will not eat a casserole dish if his life depended on it. So I don’t cook. But luckily enough, B does cook. Which is why I married him. Well, that and he’s totally arm candy. But sometimes? It’s hard. We are totally stumped as to what to have for dinner. Especially when the only thing you want to eat for dinner is sushi and don’t want to prepare it yourself or even know how. (And by “you,” I mean “I.” Because B doesn’t eat sushi and honestly I have no idea what you like to eat, internets.)

And that one time my mom and a Japanese lady came to my third grade class and showed us how to make sushi? That? THAT DOES NOT COUNT as knowing how to make sushi. I mean, hello?! THIRD GRADE. The only reason I really even remember it is because I have a picture from that day that my third grade teacher, Mr. Cox, took. But I digress.

So on nights like tonight? When all I really want is sushi? (Specifically Tokyo Roll and Supercrunch.) I eat cereal. Which is not as good as eating sushi. But at least we’re saving money by staying in and eating. And we’re being responsible.  Right?

*sigh*

Sometimes it really sucks to be this responsible. Especially when it means not eating sushi.

BREAKING NEWS

BAD Boy ate a pizza made on whole wheat flat bread and declared it the BEST THING EVER.

I know that doesn’t seem like a big deal to most people, but this kid is one of the pickiest eaters on the planet. A trait he unfortunately seemed to have inherited from his father. He won’t eat cake, for crying out loud, but he likes WHOLE WHEAT flat bread.

Yeah, I know, right? Who doesn’t like cake?

So, yeah, I’m still wrapping my head around his declaring that WHOLE WHEAT flat bread pizza is the best pizza in the world.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled activities.

Macro Fetish

CAKE!!

I have a great love and appreciation for the macro function on my digital camera. I want to get as close as possible to whatever I’m photographing and get as much detail as possible. I’m thinking about upgrading my camera for one with better macro. I’m still looking, and it might be awhile before I decide on one, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about for quite some time.

Anyway, yesterday during lunch I decided to combine two of my favorite things: macro and red velvet cake. You can see the photo set here.
