Christmas Knitting Done… Sort Of

My MIL’s shawl is done.

I have to say, despite our disputes, the SeaSilk really came through for me in the end. I love this shawl. It’s the Flower Basket Shawl again, but it is such a fantastic pattern to knit and very easy to memorize. I’d knit it again and that is saying something because I almost never knit anything more than once and I’ve already knit this shawl twice. I love the pattern that much. I’d knit with the SeaSilk again, too. I just hope my MIL likes this shawl as much as I do.

All that is left is the chevron scarf for my mother. Though, at the rate it’s knitting up, it’ll be more like a Christmas/birthday present combo rather than just a Christmas present. I’ve been knitting on it FOREVER and I STILL haven’t finished up the first two balls of Koigu and I’ve got another two balls to go. I’ve got until the end of March to finish it if it’s going to be a birthday present as well. Wish me luck!

Flower Basket Shawl Madness

phpF8NEKY

I’m fairly certain now that knitting lace with sea silk is a sickness. It must be. You know why? You see how there are two “balls” of yarn and a giant snarl next to the ball closest to the shawl? That would be one long snake-like snarl, not a ball and a snarl. And you know what I’m doing about it? TRYING TO KNIT IT. Because it seems like the best thing to do about it.

Also, there is a part of me that just wants to see how many repeats I can get out of this one ball of yarn. And that snarl? It’s just a little speed bump. It’s a… a… game the yarn is playing with me. Yeah. Kind of like a game of chicken. Well you know what? I’m not backing down first. In fact, I’m not backing down at all. I’m going to win this game. You just wait.

I’m telling you, it’s a sickness.

Wandering Eye

I know project monogamy is really boring, but right now the only thing I can work on is the Flower Basket Shawl for my MIL because it’s a Christmas gift and Christmas is 35 days away. Also? If I can squeeze it in, there is the Kiri Shawl to finish as well. That’ll be for my SIL. (Uh, M, if you’re reading this, just pretend you didn’t see that last sentence and then act all surprised later, k? Thanks.)

Anyway, again, project monogamy is boring an– hey! STOP FREAKING OUT. Thirty five days is PLENTY of time to get two shawls done I’l– oh… you’ve got how many presents to knit? Oh. Are you sure? Um…how much vacation time do you have left? None? Right. What about sick days? Well then you’ll be fine! Just be sick for, oh, say a week? You should be able to knock out quite a few of those in a week, right?

HEY! Enough about you. This is my blog. We’re talking about my project(s) here, got it?

Anyway, so project monogamy is really boring, but I’m being faithful because of the deadline and what not. However, I am most definitely lusting after several other projects to start once the shawl(s) are done. For starters, there’s this coat (Rav link) that I totally want to knit and it’s all Keri’s fault. You can also see it here. I also want to knit this, this and this shawl. I’d also like to knit this cowl with some of my handspun. I also need some mittens (Rav link) or glittens (Rav link) (learned that word from Julie) or fingerless mitts. And holy crap on a stick, I want to make these socks. Also? I’m really into color work right now.

Um, I’m going to go work on my shawl now. Uh, don’t tell it I was thinking of other projects, ok? We’re finally getting along and I don’t want anything to upset it.

To Be Continued…

The battle between our intrepid knitter and the Evil Sea Silk continues. Our intrepid knitter diligently pays attention to The Pattern and works the Evil Sea Silk as directed, and yet the Evil Sea Silk continues to thwart our intrepid knitter.

At one point, the ESS managed to create a rather unnecessarily large loop on its backside unbeknownst to our intrepid knitter for several rows. Upon discovering said large loop, the knitter was forced to practice Deep Breathing and Meditative Cursing Chanting in order to fortify herself for the Great Tinking of Aught Eight.

Operation Tink was deemed successful and the full repeat plus a few extra rows were reestablished with no harm coming to either the knitter or the yarn.

Shortly thereafter, however, the ESS attempted to go AWOL and several stitches jumped ship, er needle. More Meditative Chanting and Breathing was necessary in order to recapture said AWOL stitches. Our intrepid knitter thought she had contained all AWOL stitches and crowed in triumph. Only to eat said crow as she found herself one stitch short upon commencing the next right side row.

Upon discovering this one missing stitch, our intrepid knitter spontaneously combusted from frustration. The ESS remained unharmed.

Tune in next week to see what happens next!

Dear Magic Blocking Fairy,

I owe you a BIG apology. After I finished the Flower Basket Shawl, I agonized for weeks as to whether or not it would block out big enough. It just didn’t seem possible! What was I thinking?! I just KNEW I hadn’t made it big enough for my SMIL and that it would only block out big enough for my 8 year old niece. I just KNEW you wouldn’t be able to help.

And I was WRONG. So very very wrong.

Flower Basket Shawl

Please forgive me? I will never doubt you again, Magic Blocking Fairy.

Love,
Miss Pants

PS> Have you done something different with your hair because it looks fantastic!

How LMDP got her (knitting) groove back

Thursday I suddenly developed an itch to knit some lace. Specifically the Flower Basket Shawl using my Brooks Farm Acero yarn that I got at SAFF about two years ago. I?m pretty sure it had something to do with seeing Jen?s shawl that she knit in some Brooks Farm Acero.

I haven?t really had any great desire to knit lately. Partly because it?s summer and hot and the thought of touching wool seems unbearably hot and partly because nothing has really caught my attention or desire. Until now. In the last three days, I have knit almost the entire shawl. I?m on the 6th repeat and possibly would have been knitting the edging last night if I hadn?t spent the better part of it trying to untangle my yarn.

A word about the Brooks Farm Acero: HOLY CRAP THERE IS A LOT OF YARN IN ONE SKEIN. I wound that sucker up, but it wasn?t easy and apparently I didn?t do as good of a job as I thought. If I had? I probably wouldn?t be battling the tangle monster now.

I finally went to bed around 1:00 a.m. last night, defeated. I?m going to give it another go tonight and if I can?t get the bloody mess untangled, then I?m cutting it. It gives me no real pleasure to say that and I hope it doesn’t come down to that. But drastic times call for drastic measures.

Wish me luck.
