I can’t read. No seriously, I can’t. When I “read” the directions for the Kiri Shawl, I totally missed the fact that the needles sizes called for 4.5 mm, and 5.0 mm needles. What I “read” was SIZE 5 (US) needles. So guess what I’ve been doing? I’ve been knitting this shawl with size 5 (US) needles. Which, it turns out, are a whopping 3.75 mm. So basically I should be knitting this shawl on size 7 US needles, not size 5 US needles.
Oh, by the way, I finally found out what yarn I’m using. I know, only an idiot would separate the ball band from the yarn. Guess what? I’m an idiot. And not only did I separate the ball band from the yarn, I lost the ball band while I was at it.
Anyway, Ailsa, my secret pal from way back in the day, informed me that I’m using Kaaland Yarn Expressions in the Finch colorway. Which is dreamy. And discontinued. Shit.
And for some strange reason (see: stoopid and/or idiot and/or delusional) I thought this lovely ball of yarn was at least 1000 yards. HA! Not so much. Try 460 yards or 420 m.
My brain is starting to hurt from all my stupidness. Let’s pause for a minute and look at all the pretty colors.
I’m not going to start over. I got through the first chart last night and was elated. ELATED! Then I started realizing my grand talent for NOT reading and also general stoopidness.
So because I have managed to melt my brain with stoopid, I’m going to put this out there to you guys.
If I continue to knit this shawl on the smaller size needles, can I knit 8 repeats of the second chart AND complete the third chart (border) without running out of yarn?
Or, if the thought of figuring that out yourself also makes your brain want to melt, does anyone know a good resource and can point me in that direction so I can also figure this out? I would greatly appreciate it.

awe dont feel bad, Ive done both those things! I really like your yarn
If the pattern calls for 8 repeats, and you bought the right amount of yarn the pattern calls for, theoretically, you SHOULD be able to knit the entire shawl on the smaller needles and not run out of yarn. I always buy an over-abundance, so I’ve never put this theory to the test.
The big question is whether or not you even LIKE the fabric you’re making with the smaller needles. Oh! and you do know you’ll end up with a smaller shawl, right?
I’ll be of no help to you with the knitting stuff. (I’m confused just reading that question.)
I’ve been making a lot of dumb mistakes lately. Seriously. Projects are taking extra long to finish. Sometimes I just stare. I stare at the pattern, then stare at the needles, then back to the pattern. Then I feel tired and take a nap.
I *totally* feel your pain.
