Reminiscing

Growing up overseas, my sister and I watched a lot of European and anime cartoons. Old school stuff, too, since our shows usually came to us about a decade or two later.

For instance, The Little Mermaid cartoon that I watched growing up was this one called Anderuson Dowa: Ningyo Hime. It’s more in line with the original story by Hans Christian Anderson. It’s a beautiful and poignant story of unrequited love that will make you cry. It was never meant to be a happy ever after story and I LOVED it growing up.

Another favorite of my sister’s and mine was a Cinderella-esque (and I say that very loosely) animated story called Once Upon a Time (Original Title: Mario d’Oro und Bello Blue). It’s a German cartoon from the 70s. It’s a fantastic cartoon. A little trippy, but no pink elephants. One of my favorite parts of that cartoon was when the wicked step sister was feeding all the babies and kept making them puke. And when Maria’s dog Blue got killed, turned into a flower and then turns back into a dog when Maria plucked the blue flower that was her dog. I TOLD you it was trippy.

And the one anime that was my most favorite was a movie/series called Tosho Daimos. For the longest time the only thing I could remember about it was the giant pyramid city/ship the incredibly human looking aliens lived in. Oh, and the aliens? They all had angel-looking wings. Do you have any idea how hard it is to google a show on that kind of description? I’ll give you a hint: VERY HARD. But after a longer search, I finally found the name! I liked Tosho Daimos better than G-Force or Voltron.

My sister has already told me she’s getting me Once Upon a Time for Christmas. Now I just need to get the rest of them!
