Rediscovering My Love of Knitting

Wanna hear something crazy?

After writing my own sock pattern and being really excited about it, I got burnt out on knitting. I?d just finished my first major lace project (technically not finished because I haven?t blocked it) as well. I would look at my yarn and all my projects in various stages of progress and just go hhhhhhhhhhhhhuuuuuuuuuuugghh?

Well, I decided to give knitting a rest and get back into reading, so I picked up where I left off reading Stephanie Pearl-McPhee Casts Off: The Yarn Harlot’s Guide to the Land of Knitting. And as usual, I love her writing. I?m terrified of her blog right now, but that?s no one?s fault but my own. I just need to lock myself in the computer room with a big mug of tea and sit and read the 65 posts I?m behind.

Anyway, I digress. This turned out to be the perfect book for me to pick up and read because it led me back to my love of knitting. I mean, who would have thought a book about knitting would make me want to knit, you know?

I decided that what I really needed was something simple and relaxing. Something that didn?t require much thought but would give me great joy. And that?s when I remembered it.

B?s scarf.

Awhile back, I bought some Nashua Handknits Snowbird yarn – 2 skeins of aqua and 2 skeins of pink. It?s a squooshy, fat(heavy worsted/aran) wool/alpaca blend that is so very retro looking. It?s actually yarn that B actually picked out. I didn?t have anything in mind for it, I just liked it so I bought it and decided to let it tell me what it was going to be.

Well, fast forward to a few months later. B and I were discussing what I could knit for him that he would actually wear and he said that he would like a scarf. We went back and forth on what he wanted out of a scarf and it turned out to be a simple garter stitch scarf. So we went stash diving. He picked out the Nashua Handknits Snowbird in Aqua and I worked on it for awhile until it got set aside for something else.

Well last night after reading more of the Yarn Harlot?s book, I realized that what I needed to do was to pick up that scarf again and just do some simple, mindless knitting. So that?s what I did. I went and got it out of the yarn cabinet and started knitting. I knit through two solid hours of Bones (swoon!) and part of the evening news. I finally forced myself to set it down to go to bed towards the end of the news.

Girlfriend?s got her mojo back.

  • *frown* How is that aqua and pink?

When I get sick of knitting I usually end up knitting through my funk because I no longer remember what I did before knitting. What, just WATCH tv? What a waste!

  • I’m with Emily – there’s no way I could just sit and watch tv anymore. But yay for finding your mojo – mine was lying low for awhile there too.
