Project Polygamy

Generally, I find that monogamy is not such a bad thing. It’s helpful in relationships (you only have to remember one name) and I find the same to be true with knitting projects. Mostly.

I’ve been working on B’s (second) sock (but technically first since the first sock turned out to be a swatch that’s WAY to big for his foot. AHEM.) I love sock knitting. It’s comfort knitting.

However. It’s suddenly decided to be winter in the ‘ham and every morning as I drive to work I think about how nice it would be to have a pair of Fetching gloves. And so I start to think about maybe cheating on the sock seeing another project on the side. I mean, the sock understands that it is not the first and certainly not the last. There will be others. Our time together is limited and finite.

Besides, don’t two small projects equal a sweater? Or something like that? What’s the law of averages on this? Anyone?

Besides, it’s not like I’m going to start working on the sweater I found in my closet (right this very minute) that I forgot I was working on, oh, I don’t know, a year ago. I got most of the body done (in the round, no less) started on a sleeve and then apparently abandoned it. Probably for a sock.

And besides, if the sock starts to get lippy with me, I suppose I could always threaten it with the sweater…

You know, the pre-emptive strike? If the sock gets uppity with me and starts threatening the lives of the cat or the rabbit, I’ve got something in my bag to keep it in line…

Is it just me, or does your knitting ever seem to get kinda mafioso on your ass too?

  • All yarn that comes into this house is made to understand that I favor open relationships. Understanding is not always accepting, though, so sometimes I do have to rough someone up as an example. I try to do this with the cheaper fibers but I have to admit it makes me feel a little guilty since they weren’t loved enough as children due to their synthetic heritages.

  • I too have an abandoned sweater. It’s hanging in the closet. The first sleeve is halfway done. I doubt if I’ll ever finish it, I don’t like it. Terrible. Yes, you do need a pair of Fetching gloves. Count your rows, though. :o )

  • “All yarn that comes into this house is made to understand that I favor open relationships.” Truer words were never said. I tried yarn monogamy, and it just didn’t work for me.

  • The thing to remember here is that with the temp. getting to the teens the next few days if you don’t protect your hands you won’t be ABLE to finish the wayward sweater, or the sock mate or anything else for that matter…..so go forth and knit mittens, SAVE THE HANDS, SAVE THE KNITTING!! LOL!!
