Wandering Eye

I know project monogamy is really boring, but right now the only thing I can work on is the Flower Basket Shawl for my MIL because it’s a Christmas gift and Christmas is 35 days away. Also? If I can squeeze it in, there is the Kiri Shawl to finish as well. That’ll be for my SIL. (Uh, M, if you’re reading this, just pretend you didn’t see that last sentence and then act all surprised later, k? Thanks.)

Anyway, again, project monogamy is boring an– hey! STOP FREAKING OUT. Thirty five days is PLENTY of time to get two shawls done I’l– oh… you’ve got how many presents to knit? Oh. Are you sure? Um…how much vacation time do you have left? None? Right. What about sick days? Well then you’ll be fine! Just be sick for, oh, say a week? You should be able to knock out quite a few of those in a week, right?

HEY! Enough about you. This is my blog. We’re talking about my project(s) here, got it?

Anyway, so project monogamy is really boring, but I’m being faithful because of the deadline and what not. However, I am most definitely lusting after several other projects to start once the shawl(s) are done. For starters, there’s this coat (Rav link) that I totally want to knit and it’s all Keri’s fault. You can also see it here. I also want to knit this, this and this shawl. I’d also like to knit this cowl with some of my handspun. I also need some mittens (Rav link) or glittens (Rav link) (learned that word from Julie) or fingerless mitts. And holy crap on a stick, I want to make these socks. Also? I’m really into color work right now.

Um, I’m going to go work on my shawl now. Uh, don’t tell it I was thinking of other projects, ok? We’re finally getting along and I don’t want anything to upset it.

To Be Continued…

The battle between our intrepid knitter and the Evil Sea Silk continues. Our intrepid knitter diligently pays attention to The Pattern and works the Evil Sea Silk as directed, and yet the Evil Sea Silk continues to thwart our intrepid knitter.

At one point, the ESS managed to create a rather unnecessarily large loop on its backside unbeknownst to our intrepid knitter for several rows. Upon discovering said large loop, the knitter was forced to practice Deep Breathing and Meditative Cursing Chanting in order to fortify herself for the Great Tinking of Aught Eight.

Operation Tink was deemed successful and the full repeat plus a few extra rows were reestablished with no harm coming to either the knitter or the yarn.

Shortly thereafter, however, the ESS attempted to go AWOL and several stitches jumped ship, er needle. More Meditative Chanting and Breathing was necessary in order to recapture said AWOL stitches. Our intrepid knitter thought she had contained all AWOL stitches and crowed in triumph. Only to eat said crow as she found herself one stitch short upon commencing the next right side row.

Upon discovering this one missing stitch, our intrepid knitter spontaneously combusted from frustration. The ESS remained unharmed.

Tune in next week to see what happens next!

Reminiscing

Growing up overseas, my sister and I watched a lot of European and anime cartoons. Old school stuff, too, since our shows usually came to us about a decade or two later.

For instance, The Little Mermaid cartoon that I watched growing up was this one called Anderuson Dowa: Ningyo Hime. It’s more in line with the original story by Hans Christian Anderson. It’s a beautiful and poignant story of unrequited love that will make you cry. It was never meant to be a happy ever after story and I LOVED it growing up.

Another favorite of my sister’s and mine was a Cinderella-esque (and I say that very loosely) animated story called Once Upon a Time (Original Title: Mario d’Oro und Bello Blue). It’s a German cartoon from the 70s. It’s a fantastic cartoon. A little trippy, but no pink elephants. One of my favorite parts of that cartoon was when the wicked step sister was feeding all the babies and kept making them puke. And when Maria’s dog Blue got killed, turned into a flower and then turns back into a dog when Maria plucked the blue flower that was her dog. I TOLD you it was trippy.

And the one anime that was my most favorite was a movie/series called Tosho Daimos. For the longest time the only thing I could remember about it was the giant pyramid city/ship the incredibly human looking aliens lived in. Oh, and the aliens? They all had angel-looking wings. Do you have any idea how hard it is to google a show on that kind of description? I’ll give you a hint: VERY HARD. But after a longer search, I finally found the name! I liked Tosho Daimos better than G-Force or Voltron.

My sister has already told me she’s getting me Once Upon a Time for Christmas. Now I just need to get the rest of them!

He'll Be the First to Tell You He's Blind as a Bat

Early morning.

Me: Does this look ok?

Him: Yeah, I like the tights with the dress. It?s very modern.

Maybe an hour later:

Him: I like those tights better than the black ones you had on earlier.

Me: Uh, these ARE the tights I had on earlier.

Him: Are you sure?

Me: Yeeaaahh.

Him: Huh. Well I still like them better than the black ones.

And then my head exploded.

Lesson Learned

phpLQxI4iBaby Hat(e)

This seemingly innocent little baby hat(e) was crafted from some of the most hateful yarn I have ever had the displeasure to work with. And I really have only myself to blame. And maybe some yarn fumes. And also the siren call of the colorway.

So there was this little baby that got born as babies are wont to do. And I decided that this particular little baby needed a jacket. So I went to the yarn store in search of some pretty yarn to make this baby a jacket. And I was set on a variegated yarn because, well, I get bored easily and variegated yarn tends to hold my attention. Noro was the only yarn that was speaking to me, and this particular Taiyo yarn enthralled me to bits. It’s softer than Kureyon and more affordable than some other Noro yarns that will remain unnamed.

There was just this one teensy little problem. And that problem’s name is COTTON. I hate knitting with cotton. Cotton yarn is the bane of my existence! We are SWORN ENEMIES! But the wool and silk and other fibers assured me that they would keep the cotton under control. It was only 40% cotton. Which really, when you think about it, is less than half! I wouldn’t even notice it was there! The yarn assured me smooth sailing with its pretty colors and less than half cotton content. I was so torn. The colors were just perfect! But the cotton! Would it be all right? I mean, really all right? I just didn’t know what to do!

So I bought two skeins.

And then I proceeded to start and restart the same baby jacket over and over again. No matter what I did, the cotton was there! And noticeable! and HATEFUL. And fighting me every step of the way! It made me constantly mess up what I was doing and just refused to cooperate. I’m fairly certain that it changed the pattern on me several times when I wasn’t looking.

After much fighting and quickly getting nowhere, I decided that I would make a peace offering and knit a little hat(e) with the yarn to show that I was willing to make that first diplomatic step towards peace. And, that’s as far as it got. The yarn still refused to cooperate with me when it came to the jacket. And can I just say? It was no cake walk knitting that little hat(e). The cotton was EVER present through the whole process. It was at this point, with time running short on supply that I made an executive decision and banished the yarn to a dark corner of my yarn cabinet.

I then appropriated some handspun stash yarn and started a new jacket. In a matter of 4 days, I knit up a baby jacket. I did, however, have to use two different colorways of handspun since I didn’t have quite enough of either to make one whole sweater. Still, I think the resulting jacket turned out quite well under the circumstances. All that is left is the blocking and the buttons, which will be done tonight.

And thus I have learned, yet again, that cotton and I do not mix when it comes to knitting.

  • Same goes for religion
  • Buying a fleece will really cool your yarn buying impulses
  • You can never pay too much money for a good pair of shoes
  • Until I give up wearing clothes, I will never win the War on Laundry

Denial is a Wonderful Thing

These socks are a tad too short and a tad too tight for me, and yet I continue to knit them. Because, you know, maybe when they’re done they’ll grow a little and fit perfectly.

I can’t decide if I need to rip them back and restart or just find someone to pawn them off on. I’ll probably rip them back to the toe and redo them. I’m just not ready for that kind of defeat. Yet. *sigh*
