NextsockTake that second sock syndrome!

I cast on the second sock yesterday after writing a very vague and rough draft of the recipe. I felt so grown up accomplished after putting the recipe down on paper. I mean, I didn’t just knit something, I recorded it on paper, too. That’s just….cool.

And yes, the first sock is completely finished. It even got broken in last night. Little Man wore the one sock around the house last night for awhile. When he finally took it off, he said it was because it was itchy. I think a Eucalan bath will fix that right up. Or throwing it in the washer. Wanna see it? Yeah? Thought so.

Finishedsock

I was thoroughly disgusted with myself the first time I finished the sock because it was half an inch too short because of my total disregard for the maths. (And pure disregard for common sense, really.) If you are basing your decreases on a pattern that uses size 2 needles and the decreases are for the last two inches of the sock that make the toe, but you choose to use size 1 needles instead, it will take less than 2 inches to decrease the toe. DUH. I, of course, discovered this after I had kitchnered the toe closed and woven in the ends. Brilliant. Sheer genius at work. Seriously. Hate you maths! Big meanie!

*ahem*

After being angry at the maths and dismayed by my stupidity, I undid all my Weaving In Of The Ends and ripped back to the beginning of the decreases. I knit about .75 inches more and then decreased the toe. When it was all said and done….Voil?! A sock that fit. Not just fit, but was a little bit big so he can wear it longer than, say, a week. He is a growing boy, after all.

I was so very proud of myself the second time around and totally had a caveman moment where I beat my chest and loudly proclaimed, "Me knit sock! Sock good." Granted, I DO have enough sense not to do this publicly, so it was purely a visualization thing in my head. Really. Promise.

You know what? After reading Knitting Rules! by the greatly esteemed Yarn Harlot (and after learning the correct way to pick up stitches), I really do prefer the heel flap method. That, and because I can’t get both sides of the heel to look the same when I do short rows. Maybe I should learn to knit backward and this would not be such a problem. Hmmmm….Something to ponder.

Anyway, I’m going to end this sermon post with a little love. Allow me to present to you the sock and his soon to be mate. Just warms the heart, really.
