Nervous

Tomorrow we are embarking on a family first: camping. We’ve never done it as a family. And granted this isn’t strictly a family outing as it’s a Cub Scout camp out, but we’re all going.

My one and only camping experience in the US was about 5 years ago at the end of October in Asheville, NC. It was extremely cold and I was extremely miserable. I don’t handle cold very well. Or the threat of big, creepy bugs. What do you expect? I’m a summer child raised in the desert. I can desert and beach camp like a champion. But camping in the woods? WITH BUGS?! Let’s just say it’s not my forte. Or my idea of an ideal weekend getaway.

But BAD Boy is SO excited about it because it’ll be the first time he’s camped somewhere other than a backyard. Or the living room for that matter. And he’s doing it as a Cub Scout! (He’s been BEGGING to join Scouts for years, but this has been the first year that it’s been an option since he decided he didn’t want to play soccer anymore.) B and I have both camped at some point in our lives, but we’ve never done it together.

To say that I am nervous about camping in the woods this weekend would be the biggest understatement of the century. But I can’t back out! B bought me a sleeping bag of my very own and it has a built-in pillow and side vents and everything. And he got me a camping coffee pot thingamabob, too. And he got us an air mattress.

But there are BUGS in the woods and I don’t know how gross or scary the bathrooms will be. And did I mention the bugs? Also, there’s a chance of rain tomorrow, too. And on Sunday.

Let’s just say that the knowledge that should I need to abandon camp, I will be less than an hour away from home is very, very comforting. (It also really helps that B admitted last night that he’s nervous about camping, too.)

I just really hope the bathrooms are safe. And bug free. And it doesn’t rain. And also that there won’t be any bugs.
