In Which I Scorn Math and Get Bit in the Ass

Loser

So this was the beginning of postcard #4 last night. It took me completing a good 1o rounds or so before it hit me. This fucker is TOO BIG. Sure, the plan is to felt it, but I don’t think it’ll be small enough even once it’s felted to be a POSTCARD. Car cozy? Probably. Postcard? NO.

Let’s discuss, shall we? I’m using bulky weight yarn on a size 10 1/2 (6.5 mm) 16″ circular needle. According to the label of the bulky yarn, 3 stitches = 1 inch. According to Grace, casting on 76 stitches is NOT TOO BIG FOR A POSTCARD. For those of you as math challenged as I apparently am, let me help you understand my stupidity.

76/3 = 25.33 inches or just over 2 feet. (This is, of course, assuming that I got gauge. Phhbbbttt. Like I’d bother to check. Gauge is for sissies…and sweaters. Postcards don’t need gauge. Right? Right.)

Now, felting is magic, but I don’t think it’s so magical that it can make 2 ft of knitting shrink down to, oh say, 6 inches. So, I frogged that monstrosity and started over. I created a slightly smaller graph and this time cast on 65 stitches. Which is smaller, but let’s see if it’s really better.

65/3 = 21.67 inches

So, it’s less than 2 ft now, but just barely. However, I refuse to believe that 21.67 inches cannot be reduced to something in the neighborhood of less than a foot wide. Right? Right. Maybe not quite 6 inches, but close.

Surely.

Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease be close.

What am I saying? I’m sure it’ll be fine. Because 3.67 inches will make a HUGE difference. I’m sure of it. Power of persuasion and all that. Anyway, it’s too late now because I’m going to plow on regardless. It’ll just be an oversized postcard. No problem.

I hate you Math.
