I Really Should Give It A Name

Hatinprogress_1I forgot to mention the knitting that was going on as we travelled to Kentuck on Saturday. This hat was in progress. I got almost all of the design done on the way to Tuscaloosa. Last night I was gamely knitting away on it, making ever taller when suddenly it occurred to me that I don’t really know anyone with a 13" tall head. None of my friends are cone heads and the shape was all wrong for a conehead. It would have been better suited for someone who’s head was a giant basketball, maybe.

Anyway, I ambushed my friend Keith into trying on the hat. That phone call went something like this, "Hi Keith, it’s Grace. What are you up to? Are you at home? Cool. Will you try on a hat for me? Sweet. I’ll be over in a few minutes." I’m not sure if he knew what hit him. Still, he was game and that was awesome. When he put it on, it turns out that I was indeed knitting a hat for someone with a gargantuan head. And since I don’t know anyone with a head that big, I felt it in my best interest to rip it back to the design and start decreasing. STAT!Finishedhat_1

I’m very pleased with the end result. I haven’t blocked it yet and am debating whether or not I will. I’m thinking I probably won’t. Anyway, once it was finished, I made April, Steven and my neighbor across the street try it on. [It was the first time I'd met this neighbor and he'd locked himself out of the house and came over to use our phonebook to call a locksmith.] I didn’t walk back over to Keith’s to make him try it on again, but I was tempted.

My new neighbor thought that I could make good money selling hats like this and I took that as a great compliment, but felt weird about selling my work. I get kind of attached to my work, but feel no compunction or regrets about giving it away. Is that weird? Probably.

So, the specs on this nameless hat:

Yarn: Lamb’s Pride Bulky. 1 skein fuschia. 1 skein aztec turqoise

Needles: size 10.5

Fair isle design by Scott.

So the hat is a little big for me, but I made it man-size. Or at least for someone with a large head or lots of hair. I don’t like hats to be super tight so it’s not. Also, the turqoise shows up darker in the pictures than it really is. But what I like most about this color combination is the fact that the design REALLY pops at you.
