Give Me A Cookie

I finished ONE! AH AH AH AH! One Monkey sock. Not a pair. Just one. You know, that I started back in, um, June? Yes. That sock. Shut up. I was led astray by some flashy project with the pretty lace and then maybe a cardigan who was shaking her cables at me and I couldn’t resist because I AM WEAK. There, I said it. I just can’t get into project monogamy for all that I would like to believe I can. Happy now?

These were going to be for me, but now they’re going to my Aunt Betty because she called me last Wednesday (pre-SAFF) and placed an order for about 5 different pairs of socks. Now, in all fairness, my Aunt is a crocheter and I don’t know that she’s ever knit anything, so I don’t know if she realizes how long it takes me to knit a pair of socks, especially since I am distracted by shiny new yarn. Or roving. And now, dyeing roving! And… ahem… I think you get the idea.

Anyway, my Aunt is pretty easy to please and she wants her socks to all be in variegated yarns and whatnot, so I think these will be fine for the brown pair she asked for. So now, I just need to finish knitting the other sock. Which leads me to…

Can anyone suggest a strechy cast on? I’ve been using a variation on the long-tail cast on that either Jen or La showed me. I think it was Jen, but it’s still a little tight as I apparently am possible a tight knitter. At least when it comes to the cast on. So does anyone have any suggestions? Bueller?

  • Project Monogamy? What is that? I have never heard of such a thing? Is that another disease we need a repellent for?

(sorry, no suggestions for the cast on… i do have a good book at home for those kinds of things. if you don’t get info today, remind me and i’ll look.)

  • I must confess, I’m not a knitter. So I can’t offer any help. I have a third of a scarf that I started knitting about two years ago, it’s in my closet.

I’m just here to ease drop on the witty banter.

That sock is very nice! Love the colors and textures : )

i love love love german twisted cast-on. that might be the one you’re already using, though, since i recently discovered that the awesome tutorial i use for it actually came from Jen & La’s blog.

Project ADD there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with that…at least that’s what I tell the projects that I lie in various states all over my apt. that I refuse to even admit their existance on ravelry…you get the idea ;) . My suggestion for the best stretchy cast on method is the cable cast on, it takes a while to do and I always feel slightly stupid doing it, but honestly it is great for the give factor.

  • I love the Monkey….gotta love the Monkey. I agree that the cable cast-on is great for stretchy, but sometimes, you can either cast on over a larger needle or two needles held together. But for looks the cable is the best.
    :-)

  • Another vote for the cable cast on. Also because I often have issues guessing how long a tail to leave for the long tail cast on.

  • Monkey-TASTIC!

Knitting. I remember that. It’s that thing with yarn, right?

    Suggestion:

Don your cast on onto needles 1 or 2 sizes larger. Sometimes, I cast on over 2 of the required-sized needles held together as one.

  • For 1×1 rib I like (by which I mean “am obsessed with”) the tubular cast on, and I do it this way: http://www.fluffbuff.com/2006/07/tubular_caston_without_the_was_1.html

(Also, the AH AH AH! made me laugh way too much. In public, no less!).

  • Hi — I just stumbled onto your blog.

I would recommend the cable cast on (as others have). It’s absolutely my favorite cast on — very stretchy, and I like how it looks, too!
