Here are the gist of things:
Girl in relationship with Other guy (later becomes crappy husband).
Guy in relationship with Other girl (later becomes crappy girlfriend).
Couple activities and friendships blossom and then wither due to crappy girlfriend and a little on the crappy husband’s part also.
Time passes.
Girl leaves crappy husband.
Guy leaves crappy girlfriend.
Some more time passes.
Girl & Guy rekindle friendship.
Maybe a little more.
Things are good and laid back and no pressure and undefined for a period of time.
Girl gets strong feelings of like for Guy.
Guy likes Girl too, but maybe is scared?
Girl wants to define relationship, Guy does not.
Girl & Guy decide it is best to be just friends. No more benefits package.
Girl still likes Guy a lot. Maybe even loves him. Hopes Guy will come to his senses.

For what it’s worth and maybe that ain’t much – my sister gave me the some advice years ago when I was in a similar situation. She said to me : Don’t go backwards, go forwards. It was hard, but it was the right thing to do in the end.
So, this is my opinion only as I don’t tell people what to do EVER but if I was you I would: Go forwards. You never know what you might find. It’s scary but do it anyway.
