Flickr Video of DOOM

I’m not really sure why the internet seems to have exploded into panic and loathing over the fact that Flickr has added the ability to upload video. To me, it seems like a good idea. I’m fully aware that there are a million other websites that are dedicated specifically to video uploading, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for more. I like that if I upload a video into Flickr, I have the option to keep the video private. I haven’t seen that option anywhere else.

in my own case, it’s because i wanted to see flickr stay focused on still photography and improving the features for that, instead of splitting their focus to other things. when i joined flickr, i was looking for a site specifically dedicated to photography that wasn’t the consumerist frenzy at the lomographic society. i’m interested to see what happens in the long-term to the lack of uploading limits on pro accounts once video files start to take up more space, as well as the ever-increasing tech issues now that they have this new feature to deal with. but in the end, it’s not a problem for me to not renew my pro account and go elsewhere. i had a problem with it at first, but honestly i have a lot of problems with post-yahoo flickr, so it’s not limited to just the video thing.

i just wonder if they knew how many of their pro users were against the idea, if they ever would have implemented it. depending on how many make good on their threats to not renew, they stand to lose a lot of money, which will bring more ads in and send the site downhill fast.

err, maybe anyway. i am just speculating, i know. but wanted to give you at least one reasoned personal opinion from someone against it who wasn’t all “OMG videeo suX0rz and i h8 flickr now, kthx bai!” sort of response.

i think i have some socks to finish, or something. =]

  • I think it’s a fine idea. The being able to share a video with just a few people is good.

p.s. That’s one cool kid y’all have there.

oookay. =] have you ever used vimeo? they allow private video sharing with no 90-second limits on clips, as well as higher bitrates & resolution. (not trying to steer you away from flickr, just suggesting it as i saw it mentioned in several threads about video on flickr and you mentioned you didn’t know of any other sites that allowed private video.)

sorry to clog up your comments. i’ll go get back to that knitting now. =]
