We recently had our front steps redone. We had to because they were separating from the porch. We went from having brick and concrete steps to wood. And I will be the first to admit that I was against it from the very beginning. I did not want wood steps because I thought they would look stupid and wouldn’t go with the house. Who puts wooden steps on a brick and siding house? Well, we do. Because that’s what we could afford. And you know what? It’s not too shabby.
Not the best picture, but I think you can see what’s important. Plus, these steps went up in two days AND they’re wider than the previous steps. Also? They’re stable. And once the wood has dried, we’re going to either paint or stain. We haven’t decided yet. Suggestions?

I totally went from a hater to a lover of the steps.

I say paint. This is my considered opinion after not seeing the rest of your house.
The only suggestion I have is if you paint, be sure to use a paint on the the steps that is “grippy”. You don’t want the pizza delivery man to sue you when he slips and falls because the steps are slippery when wet from the rain or ice
There is a specific paint for this
We stained our porch two years ago with a translucent stain and for got to add ‘grit’ to the stairs, so that year the dog raced up them like a fire cracker, slipped and partically tore a ligament in her knee. But you didn’t ask for horror stories you asked for advice. The opacier the stain/paint the fewer times you have to restain. And make sure you get every crevice, because if the moisture doesn’t go out the same way it gets in and in our case causes the wood to curl. Want practice? We have to redo our porch this summer
I agree with the above comments. You do need to put some sort of grit on the steps so no one will slip and fall. They make Grip strips. They look like long rectangles of sand paper that you just peal and stick. I think they come in colors too. So you can get some that would blend in nice with the steps color.
Be sure to water seal the steps though. That way they won’t warp or discolor prematurely.
I think your new steps look really pretty, just the way they are. I wouldn’t paint them, I like natural wood color more. And Charlie! He’s very handsome!
I suggest you drive around some neighborhood and see what look you like best on other houses – paint or stain. Both will have some upkeep. We need to do something about ours, the paint is peeling horribly. I’m sure the PO didn’t use concrete paint!
