You guys, my basement kitty is a speshul snowflake. We’ve been beating our heads over her because she continues to use the carpet in the dining room as her litter box. Always in the same spot. Even though the litter pans aren’t there anymore. They’re downstairs in the basement. B even cut a cat flap into the door to go down there so Charlie will stay out of what he considers “treat boxes” but the cats can reach it.
The other night I caught Chelsea (basement kitty) trying to poop in the dining room. I startled her into stopping and then carried her downstairs to the litter boxes. She had no trouble understanding what the litter boxes were for once she got down there. So I’m thinking, “Yay! Problem solved!” Then I left her downstairs to figure out how to get through the cat flap and come back upstairs.
My celebrating? It was a little premature.
That cat stayed down in the basement for THREE HOURS because she couldn’t figure out how to use the cat flap. THE CAT FLAP. Keep in mind that my brilliantly genius cat, Chloe, has been using this flap for MONTHS after I showed BOTH CATS how to use it. Chelsea has seen Chloe go in and out of the cat flap a million times.
But when it was her turn to do it? Nothing. NADA. She apparently drew a complete blank. It’s a good thing she’s so cute and sweet, because that’s about all she’s got going for her.

Your blog ate my comment. What I said was:
She’s really cute, but that’s so sad. You can lead a cat to the cat flap, but you can’t make them smart…
Damn, it’s a good thing I have such a good memory or that gem would have been lost in the ether!

I have found if you put their food there, they won’t go there anymore for peeing…. We have dealt with this issue….
Try the food thing. It might work. We haven’t had that particular problem, but I’ve heard that it’s worked for others.
