Monster Army

This year BAD Boy is in fifth grade. It’s going to be a bittersweet year as this is his last year at the elementary school. Thanks to proration, this year there are only two fifth grade classes and there are a lot of students in each class. And when he asked me what I was going to knit for the birthdays this year, I just couldn’t say, “Nothing.” (I might be a bitch, but I am not that mean.) There are also a lot of students who were in the same class as BAD Boy last year. This meant cupcakes were out.

I needed something small and quick to knit. And preferably something that could be accomplished by stash diving rather than stash enhancing. I ended up deciding on the Monster Chunks pattern (Rav link) by Rebecca Danger. Y’all, this pattern fits all my requirements. AND these are possible the cutest things I have ever knit. Not to mention addictive to boot. You can’t knit just one. Which is good, because I’ve got to knit at least 27 if them. They just need mouths. I’ll probably add the mouths after I’ve knit them all up. Maybe. I really think they’re super cute without the mouths too.

Monster Chunk Brigade

I mean, look at them! They are ridiculously cute! I want my own personal Monster Chunk Minion Army. We will rule the world with teh cute!

*ahem*

I think I’m going to need constant reminding to think of the children.

In Which I Shake What My Momma Gave Me*

Last week, Tuesday in fact, I had big plans to go to my very first belly dancing class (not counting that one drop in I did about 12 years ago. Holy shit, 12? Damn, I am OLD.) ever. But instead I got a sinus infection and stayed home and slept. A lot. But I also e-mailed the teacher and asked if it would be all right to come in one week late and she told me that would be fine. So last night I made it to the class (sinus infection free).

When I was really little, my mom made me take ballet. Most of the movements were slow and my attention would wander. I also had (still have) a bit of a sway back and was constantly smacked on the butt and told to stand up straight and tuck my butt in. I hated it. And after suffering through what seemed like an eternity of ballet lessons, my mom finally let me quit.

When I was in college, my major required me to take a dance class. Surprisingly enough, my prior ballet experience didn’t count so I opted for ballroom dance instead. I really liked ballroom dance, but ended up learning how to lead since we had more girls than guys in the class. (Shocking, right? That guys wouldn’t want to learn ballroom dance?)

Other than that, all my other dance experience has been shakin’ it on the dance floor. Past tense. I’m an old married woman now and eat dinner at 4pm and go to bed at 7pm or maybe 8pm if I’m feeling frisky.

Anyway, so I went into this belly dance class not knowing anyone and equal parts nervous and excited. There were women of all sizes and ages in that class. I tried really hard to stay in the back corner since I’d missed the first class and didn’t want to look like a complete idiot, but there wasn’t quite enough room so I ended up in the front row. Mostly because the teacher told me to move up. And pointed to the spot for me to go. Which also happened to be DEAD CENTER in the front row. Embarrassing! But actually? It wasn’t. Mostly because once the class got started, I didn’t have time to think about anything other than what the teacher was doing. The only time I saw what my fellow classmates were doing was when we turned to the left or right and even then it was just to make sure I wouldn’t run into them. I have no idea how well they danced or not.

It was AWESOME.

At the end of the class, two of her advanced students danced for us. The second girl who danced did a veil dance and she was amazing. And I was sold. I want to learn how to do that.

I see a lot of belly dancing lessons in my future.

*My dad’s side of the family is where my shaker came from but it just doesn’t sound right if you say “Shake what your daddy gave ya”

I Think the Universe Is Mad at Me

Today has not gone well.

  • Walked outside and and then back inside and got me some lovely fever symptoms!
    • chills
    • clammy
    • sweaty (well, hard to tell if it was just from the fever what with the entire city being an outdoor oven, but whatever)
  • raging sore throat
  • drainage of the snotty kind
  • Eyes feeling like they’re full of grit
  • General malaise
  • LOTS of sneezing

All these things won me a visit to the doctor. I actually really like my doctor, but I am never happy to see her because it means I am sick.

And she was all: You haz sinus infection. FTW!

And I was all: FML.

And she was all: Take these medicines.

So I am restocked on all my stupid allergy medicines (that’s right, PLURAL) and a Z-Pac for the stupid sinus infection.

And then I thought maybe the Universe felt sorry for me (you know, sinus infection!) because the lenses I ordered for my camera came today. So I thought I might cheer myself up by trying one or two of them out. And I was sitting on the floor next to the fireplace taking a picture when I noticed some discomfort with my left leg. The leg I was sitting on. So I moved that leg to get more comfortable only to discover MORE discomfort.

So finally I moved off my leg. And looked at it. And then twittered this:

Note to self: if your leg hurts when you're sitting in it. Get off it and see why instead of adjusting for comfort. http://yfrog.com/3u4eycj

And if you’re afraid to click on the link, then here is the picture that I posted.

Ouch

That “discomfort” I felt? That was me carving designs into my leg with a rather good sized piece of broken glass from a vase that Chloe knocked off the fireplace mantle over a month ago. Charming, no?

I’m thinking about maybe investing in a full body kevlar suit. Anyone know where I can get one?

Sidetracked

I really intended to just work on my shawl this week and finish the edging. Really. I want to finish this shawl so I can wear it (when it gets cooler and less humid) and so I can brag on how it only took me 2 years to finish. OK. So I can just brag that I finished it and we won’t mention that it took me 2 years. But whatever.

Anyway, the point is that I just hit a wall and couldn’t knit on it anymore. I was chomping at the bit to start any other project so long as it didn’t involve lace weight yarn and beads. Lots and lots of shiny beads. Ooh! SHINY!

Digressing!

Playing with Color

Awhile back I dyed some mill end roving I got from Sheep Shed Studio.

This was not one of my better attempts as the roving got slightly felted. One very important lesson I learned from this dye attempt is that you CANNOT rush the process. Especially the part where you let the roving cool down on it’s own and don’t “help” it by immersing it in cold water. That’s what causes the felting.

But despite being ever so slightly felted, I really liked the way the colors turned out. I let them dry on their own (to not felt them anymore than they already were), petted them a bit, braided them up and then stuck them in my roving cabinet. And essentially forgot about them for awhile.

But then yesterday, because I was going a little crazy from knitting the same thing over and over and over and over and over, I decided that I needed to do something else completely different. Anything different. But I was feeling a little guilty about abandoning the shawl until my good friend Elizabeth reminded me that if you spin to get away from the knitting, it’s not cheating. Because, hello! It’s spinning, not knitting. I immediately felt better about my need to be sidetracked with a diversion. That’s right! It’s a diversion!

Mmmm....Diversion! Sidetrackery!

It’d been a ridiculously long time since I’d playing with roving and my spinning wheel. Like an embarrassingly long time. So this was an excellent diversion. And while we got off to a little bit of a rough start, it ended up being a lot like riding a bike. Once you get back into the rhythm of it all, piece of cake. Mostly.

I actually dyed two different colorways and then spun them both up together. The blue/green colorway is really easy to see, but the other is roving that I “spot” dyed with blue/green/purple and is so much more subtle when it spins up. The spots sort of bled together a bit, but I really like how it turned out. Here it is in its unspun glory.

2010_07290009

I spun my little spinny heart out yesterday and loved every moment of it. I even stopped to take the time to draft my roving before I spun it. Mostly because, you know, I had to. You know, to unfelt the roving. I think I actually might start taking more time to draft my roving before I spin. On the whole, I seem to get more consistent yarn when I do that. Not always, but mostly. Anyway! I had about 7 small braids and did my best to spin it all up on one bobbin. I got all but a very little bit of the last braid on the bobbin. And then I Navajo plied it all.

104 yards of Nummy Yarn

I’m mighty pleased with the way it all turned out. Now I just need to set it and knit it up. I’m thinking cute, short fingerless mitts.

Squee!

And now? Now I feel like I can get back to my shawl without begrudging it. Mostly. Maybe right after I spun up some more of my stash…
