Fibert Studio

I busted ass this weekend and cleaned out what is essentially a giant hallway turned bathroom downstairs in our finished basement. Why the people who lived in this house before thought that an open bathroom right off the garage was a good idea is beyond me. However, it makes for a good dyeing station. Behold.

I’ve got some yarny art to go on the walls, but I need some frames or maybe some of these to get them up.

YAY for unnecessary bathroom fixtures in a hallway in my basement!

On the opposite wall, that I did not photograph is a water closet (literally), regular closet and open bathtub with a shower curtain. Why they didn’t install a contained shower, I also don’t know why.

Anyway, so yes, once the “bathroom” turned fiber studio was up and running, I got right down to business.

DSCF5232Elvis makes sure nothing happens to the roving.

I’m considering this a test run.For several reasons:

  1. I got a hot plate to use downstairs and bought a new pot to steam my yarns in and I wasn’t sure how it’d go.
  2. This is unidentified mill end roving.
  3. I don’t have one single continuous strand(?) that is even remotely close to 4 oz. Once the roving is completely dry I’ll weigh it and then see what might be viable.

So here’s my question. Would y’all be willing to buy roving that is mill end and less than 4 oz?

  1. 1. what’s a “fibert”
    2. people sell quantities of roving less than 4oz all the time, just price appropriately
    3. birmingham used to be a steel town, like pittsburgh, yes? In pittsburgh, people would have open bathrooms in the basement near the laundry so that men coming in from their shift at the mills would come in through the basement and clean up there – pee, shower, change clothes – without tracking dirt and crap through the rest of the house. My grandma’s basement has an open area toilet and shower.

    now you know :)

  2. I’m going to say no. Not because I don’t know what a mill end, or roving, or any of that stuff really IS – but because I don’t like the look in Elvis’ eyes as he watches it. I think he’s having impure thoughts about it and I just don’t like it!!!

    lol

  3. Oh! It looks pretty though!!!

  4. What a fantastic dying studio!!!! I can’t wait to see all the “magic” you create!!!

  5. That is great!!! And yes, I would buy roving that is less than 4oz. That is especially good for people who are just learning and may not want to spend a whole lot at first. And isn’t ESC just a wealth of information?!?!?!

  6. I’m really glad that you have Elvis to help keep an eye on things!

  7. p.s. I forgot to tell you this the other day but in the house I just moved out of there was a half bath in the UNFINISHED basement. You can’t get into the basement from the house either only from the half door in the backyard- it was WAY creepy, like you could keep your secret mutant family down there and no one would ever know.

  8. So jealous of your dedicated dyeing studio!!!
